Products and Products Variant Configuration in the Manufacturing module

Products have variants that differ from one another. It is important to configure the product and its variants before we begin the manufacturing process. With the Manufacturing module of Odoo17, it is possible to create a product as well as its variants. You can do that by going to the Manufacturing module and clicking on the ‘Products’ menu, then selecting the ‘Products’ submenu. A New button is available on the left side of the page for creating new products. New products can created by clicking the New button. These variants can then configured by selecting the Attributes & Variants tab in the product form. Product Variant Configuration

According to the screenshot above, we have configured a new product, a ‘Desk Chair’, and 6 variants, each with 2 attributes, color and chair headrest. Also we have set the product type as storable and we can configure different price for the product with different values.  When a chair with a headrest is configured, we can change the price for that product by clicking the configure button near the variant values. In this case, we would like to provide an extra 50$ price for the chair with headrest. To do so, we click on the product variant Configuration button near each specific variant value.

Adding the extra price to the value price extra field and excluding the product with any attribute values can easily done by including the product template as the product and the attribute values that should not included.

Inventory Tab

Once the changes have been saved, go back to the product form and click on the Inventory tab. Several options can set up, including routes and MTO (Manufacture and Replenish on Order). This means that any time a customer places an order and there aren’t enough of the products available, a manufacturing order will generated.

With regards to the product, there are six variants to choose from. Once we return to the product list, we will see that the newly created product has no onhand quantity.

The next step is to create a bill of materials for this product. A new Bill of Material can created by clicking the New button under the Bill of Material sub-menu in the product menu.

You should write the product name and BOM type “Manufacture this Product” in that Bill of Materials form. As well as components, we can provide quantities required to manufacture the products under the components tab. The “Apply on Variants” field allows you to specify whether a manufacturing order applies to all product variants or only some of them. The manufacturing process management field allows for the management of items with multiple versions to be flexible.

Operations tab in BOM

Then click the Operations tab on the Bill of Material form. When selecting the operation tab, we can specify the operations that should conducted for manufacturing the product, and if any of those operations only apply to a certain variant, the popup that appears when clicking that operation allows us to specify that variant. The ‘Consumed in Operation’ tab in the component tab can used to provide these created operations. A BOM’s Operations tab lets you determine which operations are necessary to manufacture a given product.

The ‘Add a line’ option on the Operations tab allows us to create new operations, and if a specific operation is required for a specific variant, we can create it. The first thing we need to do is set up the basic operation for the manufacturing of all variants.

In the operation tab, click the add line button to create a new operation. Provide the work center where this operation will take place, set the duration, and specify the variant if this operation belongs to a specific variant.

For all products, regardless of their variants, we have set the ‘Basic’ operation.

‘Optional’ operations are performed only on the ‘Desk Chair with headrest’, so specify that variant in the Apply on Variants field.

New Order Creation

When manufacturing a product, there are certain components, operations, etc. that must performed. Therefore, when a customer places an order for this product with zero on-hand quantities, the manufacturing process is triggered. We’ll create a new order for this product now.

Using the sales application of Odoo, create a new quotation for our newly created product ‘Desk chair’. We are then presented with a popup window to choose the variant of the product when we select that product. Choose the variant of the product our customers need.

In the dialog box that appears after selecting a variant, click on the Confirm button. You will see the saved quotation and confirmed by clicking the Confirm button.

Smart Tabs

As soon as the order was confirmed, we received two smart tabs, one for delivery and one for manufacturing. In order to make the product we need to manufacture it first. As there is not sufficient quantity of the product, we want to manufacture the product first.

By clicking on the manufacture smart tab, we can see that the MO for the product variant has been generated, and that all the components required to manufacture the product variant are listed under components.

We can find the operations that required to manufacture the product on the work order tab. two operations are added for manufacture the product,

Choosing the Start button for the first operation will start that operation, and once the operation is complete it will be sent to the Done button. In the same way, repeat these steps for the second operation and then click the Produce All button to manufacture the product, whereby the status of all operations will turn from In Progress to Finished.

After the manufacturing process for the product has been completed, it is time to complete the order by delivering it. To complete the order, go back to the quotation, click on the delivery smart tab, and click Validate to validate delivery.
